Trip to the Archives/LIS 201

Last Thursday, my LIS 201 class took a trip to the archives. Before that day, I had only passed by the building, never entering. So, this was a new experience for me. The archives are located in the McCain Library (which I found slightly funny), and they are located directly behind the Cook Library. As we entered the building, we entered on the second floor and made our way up to the third floor. After noticing the strategically placed lockers, we made our way into what looked like a museum show room. Now, that I think about it that was probably the point. We did not stop to look at any of the pieces that were in there. Instead, we made our way into a small room that was located by the showroom. This room was made for an audience with several chairs and questionnaires and a smart board with a PowerPoint slide presentation waiting. After introducing herself, our “tour guide” went through her PowerPoint about the many features of the archives. What I found to be interesting was the online archive source that contained information and pictures of some of the pieces that happened to be in the archives. After showing us her presentation, she began to show us some of the pieces that were displayed in the archives. This was probably my favorite part of the tour. She began showing us original manuscripts of Curious George and other well-known children’s books. I was very impressed to find out that our school’s archive is one of the biggest archives that contain children’s books. I think that many people do not give enough credit to authors who create children’s book, and to know that our school has taken the time to honor them and house them respectfully warms my heart. I also think it is incredible to have such important resources at hand where people from all over the world can come see and study them. Moving along, she started to cover some more, what I consider, nontraditional works. Some books that are kept in the archives were not for their content but rather for their binding. I guess you can “judge a book by its cover.” Some of the covers for these books were really interesting to look at. They were ornate and handcrafted and completely original to the owner of the book. I found the monk’s prayer book to be very interesting. The pages from the book were made with real animal hide. Our guide also told a very interesting story of a man who claimed to own several pieces of rare art. This man this donated them to the library. After checking out the man’s story, turns out that this man had been making forgeries and giving them to museums and libraries all over the nation. What is really interesting is that the man never went to jail because he never asked for money. After looking at a few more of the pieces in the archives, it was time to go. I really enjoyed visiting the archives. I could definitely see myself going to the archives to look for history related material for my future classes.

Floppy Disk Fallacies shows the importance of technology in school while also keeping in mind that sometimes "old school" may be best for school.

RL #10 - Music Edition

So, after thinking about what song I was going to analyse for about two seconds, I came up with this beautiful melody. Wait for it....

Kiss from a Rose by Seal

Yes. Epic.

Now for the analyzing. I've been in a love-love relationship with this song ever since I heard it from, you guessed it, the Batman forever movie (awesome movie, just btw). Now, there has been a debate on what the lyrics actually are, but from what I can scrounge up, I will post what most people think the lyrics are.

There used to be a graying tower alone on the sea.
You became the light on the dark side of me.
Love remained a drug that's the high and not the pill.
But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and
The light that you shine can be seen.
Baby,
I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.
Ooh,
The more I get of you,
The stranger it feels, yeah.
And now that your rose is in bloom.
A light hits the gloom on the gray.
There is so much a man can tell you,
So much he can say.
You remain,
My power, my pleasure, my pain, baby
To me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny.
Won't you tell me is that healthy, baby?
But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen.
Baby,
I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.
Ooh, the more I get of you
The stranger it feels, yeah
Now that your rose is in bloom.
A light hits the gloom on the gray,
I've been kissed by a rose on the gray,
I've been kissed by a rose
I've been kissed by a rose on the gray,
...And if I should fall along the way
I've been kissed by a rose
...been kissed by a rose on the gray.
There is so much a man can tell you,
So much he can say.
You remain
My power, my pleasure, my pain.
To me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny, yeah
Won't you tell me is that healthy, baby.
But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen.
Baby,
I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.
Ooh, the more I get of you
The stranger it feels, yeah
Now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the gray.
Yes I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray
Ooh, the more I get of you
The stranger it feels, yeah
And now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the gray
Now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the gray.

Beautiful, just beautiful. Now, I've been thinking about what this song represents. There is a bunch of symbolism in this song, so I'll just touch base on it. What I get from the song is love. A rose represents love in many cases. In this case, I think he is talking of love pulling you out of the dark or the "gray" areas of life. Love becomes "light from the dark side of me." He is so much in love that it becomes an addiction, a "pill" or "high." Is that healthy? Maybe. Depends on what he was addicted to before. But I do believe that he is also amazed about love of this woman. His "eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen." I really think this is a beautiful song about love. *Sigh* But, like I said. I'm just touching the surface. Write what you think below!

Oh, and here's the video:

Interesting use of a fan there guys... Oh the nineties...

1.) Well, the ad encourages us by scaring us. The ad is trying to raise awareness of Autism, and it wants to make parents fear for their children. It also wants parents to know the signs of Autism.

2.) The two elements that were brought forth to my attention were how the mother is viewing the child and how the ad is contrasting success and the truth with statistics.

3.) 1. Statistics and how those statistics could affect the girl in the ad
     2. Knowing the signs of Autism while the mother watches her child
     3. The slogan "Autism Speaks: It's time to listen" and how the viewer could interpret the message
I think it's a good strategy. It makes the reader take aware of what this ad is really trying to convey. It also gives this article a more serious tone. This is what you need to know and this is why.

Okay, so this picture has goten a bit of controversy. That is actully Heather Morris from Glee, which is very much a family show. When this photo, and others, came out pople were in uproar claiming that it glamorizes domestic violence. I'll let you be the judge.

This second one is of shoes.... and of men..."wrestling." I think it speaks for itself... And then some...

And this last one is what happens when you invite the wrong people to help you put up glow-in-the-dark stars in your dorm room.

2.) No, they are definitely not hard choices for most Americans to make. They do have to say a lot about our culture. There are a lot of things that Americans put way too much thought into: how we look, what to drive, material possessions.  And that has a lot to do with the images we see everyday. It also shows that Johnson knows how to use sarcasm, and he sees this part of American culture as a negative.

1.) I believe that his connection is that images have shaped our lifestyle into a constant wanting of things we don't have.

2.) Basically what i said in the first question. The title does forshadow the theme a bit. The American Dream is gaining success and reinventing it would be gaining material items.

3.) She explains how people saw things in a different way and how it evolved when images were invented. She then goes on to say how people's thoughts were different once they had this consumer mentality. She also had beautiful quote usage.

4.) She wants people to understand what's happening and then wants them to do something about it. She wants people to change their mentality towards images and how images are effecting the public.

5.) Her ideas are really solid in her paper. She's very specific in telling her point of view of images and the shaping of consumer mentality. I think she could have touched more on how to rid ourselves of this mentality. Maybe, put some more details on how this is possible.
